The Périgord Noir, a historical heritage rich in castles!

The Dordogne department has an important historical past. Many castles were built in the region, particularly in Périgord Noir. Some date from the Middle Ages, others from the Renaissance, offering tourists and locals a wide choice of tourist and wonderful sites to visit. Between fortresses, manor houses, citadels and ancient stately homes, there is something for everyone!

Splendid monuments to discover

There are so many castles in the Périgord Noir, we cannot afford to list them all. In fact, it is estimated that there are more than 1,000! Most can be visited with the family and depending on the location and the season, activities are also on the program for the visits to help you discover the areas from a more fun angle.

Near our Holiday Village, you will find the Châteaux of Beynac, Castelnaud, Marqueyssac, Fenelon, Sauvebooeuf, Puymartin and that of Milandes. And if you are interested in the Middle Ages, do not hesitate to take a walk in one of the fortified medieval villages nearby, such as Domme and La Roque-Gageac. You will see remains of ancient towers and fortresses for example (and it’s free!).

An ideal destination for families and history buffs

In the Périgord Noir, many villages have been classified as “Most Beautiful Villages in France”. This is the case of certain small fortified towns mentioned above (Sarlat and Domme), but also of villages housing magnificent castles, such as Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, St Geniès and Saint-Léon-sur-Vérère. Thanks to its rich cultural heritage, this little corner of paradise in the Dordogne is perfect for a family vacation, especially if you love history and legends! There are so many picturesque and historic places to see that you will undoubtedly want to come back to try to visit them all!
