Choosing an animal park: Dordogne and Lot, what are the best addresses for family visits!

The Dordogne is the ideal destination for family stays. Walks, bike rides, canoes, visits to villages and historic monuments, there is no shortage of activities. And to please your children, don’t hesitate to take them to one of the department’s many animal parks. Zoos, farms, aquariums, reserves, here is our selection of addresses to absolutely visit during your next vacation.

Educational and fun places

In these areas dedicated to animals, you can discover rare and protected species while having a pleasant time with your children. In addition, it is a good way to raise awareness of respect for fauna and flora while entertaining them. If they like fish and the seabed, the Aquarium du Périgord Noir – Iguana Parc is the place to be. Indeed, it is the largest private freshwater aquarium in Europe where more than 6,000 fish live in their element in a captivating universe with tropical vegetation around the pools. The change of scenery is immediate! In addition, after admiring the fish, you can take a walk at the Iguana Park where you will see pythons and iguanas. A different place but just as fascinating. If your children prefer dinosaurs, we advise you to take the road to Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, in Dordogne and stroll through Le Conquil, an animal park with reconstituted dinosaurs to go back in time for the space of a afternoon.

Places where endangered species are preserved

In the Dordogne, you will also find zoological reserves where rare species are protected. 10 km from Sarlat is the magnificent Calviac reserve. On 3 hectares, 200 animals are welcomed (around thirty species). There are lemurs, maned wolves, barn owls, European minks and even Parma wallabies. Here, the objective is not to exhibit species but to protect them by offering them a natural habitat in which they are safe. Another place to see at all costs, the Touron farm in Campsegret, in the heart of the countryside. In around twenty hectares of forest and plain, more than 400 animals from all over the world live. You even have the possibility of approaching them to pet them! Llamas, zebras, goats, deer, 4-horned sheep, and many others populate this farm. Also take advantage of your visit to stroll through the park which is splendid at any time of the year!
